I have drifted into a sacrificial method of removing recalcitrant IM
bolts... pounding a Torx socket into them. I forget which size, but the
six teeth line up nicely and really chew into the bolt head, allowing
its removal.
of course, first try the allen head, if you can, clean the bolt head
with a pick and some brake cleaner. then, as you suggest, tap the tool
into the bolt gently until it is seated well.
resort to the torx bit only if the allen simply will not work.
