2.3L NG conversion in my 84 4KQ

Larry,

I guess I stand corrected, again. I did this conversion about 10 years ago.
Now I recall using the 1.8 out of an '85 Type2 Sciricco. This had hydraulic
lifters, but had not gone to the high compression setup.

The Jetta GL motor I got was from an '88 with integrated CISEIII+KNock
sensor, and I distinctly recall the control unit said Motronic on it.

The fun I had on that conversion was I couldn't use the Jetta manifold setup
and therefore could not use the electronic injectors and fuel rail. I was
able to bastardise it, very well though, by using the CIS-E portion from the
Scirroco and the Ignition with knocksensor portion from the Motronic unit.

Interesting, to say the least, but I'd never do it again.

The car was dangerously fast. As I recall with the 268 cam and Gillette
exhaust, etc. this was putting at least 120HP in a '81 Type1 Scirocco an
1800lb car. I scanned an old photo the other night, but haven't been able
to post it on my site yet, along with many other pics of this project in
progress, and some nice ones of the '87 Turbo Quattro Wagon as well.

Anyway, it is new to me about the compression being made in the NG lower
end, not the head, but it does make sense. That doesn't wreck my current
project underway, but suggests maybe I want to consider building up a setup
similar to Peymon's since as it turns out I have the necessary components,
which I was sort of ignoring and keeping for spare parts. All in good time
though.

I do expect with the work I'm doing with the complete NG setup for it to be
at least marginally faster, albiet, I could have come close with a bit less
work.

Thanks for all of the replies and for everyone who set me straight.

Ben

BTW, the '85 GTi/GLi engines (don't recall the code off hand, Bentley not
here) were the 10:1, knock sensor set up, but with CIS-E not Motronic.
Rated at 100 HP in '85, a different ignition map changed it to 102 HP in
'86 (GTi/GLi) through '87 in the GT/GLi. GTi in '88 had the 1.8 16V
(123HP), and the Motronic Engines were phased in in '88.
