power window motors, approx. 400 each. (may have dropped more, were 500)
if the timing belt is not DEAD on, check engine light will stay on, BTW, 
can't move dist. to make up for it.
automatic tranny and wiring(internal harness breaks)
poor build quality
power lock problems
if you unhook the battery, will have drivability problems for about 15 
minutes until ecu's relearn driving habits

In my opinion, you would be better off with an older model.  Scratch that, 
buy the 97, a mechanic in your area needs a down payment on a house.

Maybe I'm being harsh, but I see more stupid problems on newer ones than 
older models, and some parts are way too much for a VW.  33k is tempting.

Maybe the TR isn't a bad idea after all.  Get a 250 though.
