What you might be missing is the ridiculous amount of torque the "mere"
250 HP comes with -- factory says 258 ft-lbs @1,850, actual numbers
apparently more like 280-290 (!).  You're right -- pretty much any car
these days has 200+ HP, and they're almost universally a few hundred
pounds lighter  -- but I've seen very few cars that can keep with even
my venerable '91 200Q on the freeway, let alone the S4.

To me, what's most telling is that you can reasonably drive the S4
around town at 25 mph in *sixth*!
