That is the Audi S badge that's found on the "S"port models (as in S4,
S6, etc).  What's you saw in the bars is not "84".  It's "S4".  Audi had
changed the look of the S badge for the 2001.5 and later models.  What
you saw was the older style.  The new style dispenses with the two
chrome bars and made the "S4" script much larger.  Also there is no more
4-rings in the red portion.
