don't known if this will be relevant but on my old 87 coupe quattro the nuts
for the rear axle were a different diameter than the fronts (32mm rear 30mm
fronts I think) this would not have been a problem but I bought 4x 30mm nuts
(after asking exactly the above question to the guy in the shop). Put one on
fine (i.e. it did not strip, but once there it was not coming off again -
lasted 2 years too before I needed to relpace the CV joint) and the other
one stripped the thread. Anyway this could be what's happen to your 90.
