OK, silly me - it doesn't really matter which way the distibutor is oriented
as long as the rotor lines up with the distributor.

Sure, you bet, take the dist. (off the car), and line up the center of the
rotor electrode with the mark of the dist. housing, and simply slide the
dist. into the head, done! Typically the hall connector is facing the
firewall, so insert the dist. with this orientation.
Problem with randomly rotating the dist. while cranking is 1) who know what
will happen, and where you will get the engine to randomly fire at and 2)
the dist may be facing the wrong way so that certain wiring connectors no
longer fit properly.
