Yes indeed.
I'm not an expert here, but the turbo has an oil seal of sorts on each side.
The exhaust side is under constant positive pressure. The blower side has
vacuum at the inlet, and pressure at the outlet. All this is under some
horrific temperature fluctuations.
I'm amazed they can seal them at all.
I am not aware of any way to "check" them other than oil being on the wrong
side of the seal.
My URQ, with what I believe to be the original turbo, is leaking enough to
produce an embarrassing cloud of blue smoke, only to not smoke again for a
day or 2. I'm sure the intake is probably the source, as the cloud appears to
be burnt oil. An exhaust leak would probably burn in the hot exhaust, but I'm
not sure. Newly rebuilt turbo will be ready tomorrow. I'm dreading the swap,
as it is a very difficult endeavor.
If your hose from the turbo to the intake is oily and smells of "coke" or
burnt oil, that is usually a tell-tail sign of some leakage.
I really don't know if some is tolerable or none etc.
