aircon question

Hi,
The air-con (not climate control) on my 92 80 q (2.8) doesn't work.
When I press the A/C button the light comes on but that's it. Can anyone
tell me if:
Should the engine idle speed drop when the A/C is switched on ?
Mine does not but I'm not sure if this is a problem given it's a 2.8 (i.e. a
fair amount of torque) but I suspect it should since it will be running very
lean at idle.
Where is the A/C compressor ?
I think it on the bottom of the engine below the battery - nice and easy to
get to !
How can you tell if the magnetic clutch is working or not ?
Is it a simple case of short 2 wires to test the clutch works ?
Any leads on how to fix this would be appreciated.
Simon
It's amazing what some hot weather will do :)
