And, C R A N K I T U P ! ! ! ! (caveat: big bandwidth hog!)
Being die-hard 911 fans, my ex- and I drove to Laguna Seca for the 50th
Anniversary in.... 1998? 1999? (sheesh! can't even remember) at the
Montery Historics. I think most of the interviews in the video above were
done then (see if you can spot the quickie of Vic Elford -- my all-time
favorite driver -- piloting a 911 rally car at the Sweden Rally.) We were
at the top of the corkscrew when the monsters came out.... On the pace
lap, we could hear them lumbering slowly up the hill, and when the last
of the Viper pace cars came over the top and the P-cars started rolling
down, the crowd actually went silent with shock and reverence for about 5
seconds. Then everyone stood up and started cheering! It was an incredible
experience; I've never witnessed anything like it.
We're less fortunate here in the U.S. because folks aren't interested in
road course racing like they are in Europe.... but wow, what a way to lose
touch with history when you're too busy/self-centered/short-visioned
(whatever) to experience things like that.
