Rust on an A1 Rabbit/Golf/Scirocco is definitely an issue. Not a strong
point of the car, though it's body integrity is somewhat ahead of it's
doorhandle reliablility. BUT, if the motor is strong, it'll be as
screamer. Personally, I think I'd stay clear, that rocker is the main
longitudinal structural member of the car. If it's the rear wheel well,
not so easy to replace. Front fenders are dime a dozen if you can find a
clean one. By your description, its front fenders are the older round
headlight OR pre-turnsignal in the fender series (i.e. pre-'82). I think
they are prettier, and you can find nice Euro's for fair prices, which
are EXCELLENT lights IMHO (my A2 GTi has them, they are different from
the late model US A2 GTi's with round DOTs. Seems to me, if your son is
obsessed with it, you should offer less than $1000 for it, as major body
work is imminant (sp?). Everything else is pretty reliable EXCEPT if the
gearbox is a GTi code gearbox, which has a tendency to self destruct (see
posts about a month or so ago about another GTi potential purchase).
