Head gasket again......Help!

Could someone please confirm this is normal?  I am
putting a new head gasket on the '88 MC out of a 5000
CS turbo, the replacement is the same as the one that
was in there.  I am comfused because they both seem to
block off many of the passeges that run through the
block and head, and the holes that are punced out are
much smaller that the respective openings.  Are many
of these passeges voids that have nothing running
through them?
