Indicators, Oil Pumps, and Anxiety

Hello all,

After just shelling out $1000 for a used head, head kit, planing, timing belt,
and labor to replace a cracked head due to the catastrophic failure of the
water pump on my son's 88 5ksq I decided to give it a "shakedown" for a week
or so. As I'm returning from a quick trip to work yesterday morning the oil
light comes on and the associated beeping begins. Upon pulling over in the
next rest area (mercifully only a few hundred yards away) I let the engine
cool down for a few minutes and checked the oil level. It was down about a
third of a quart. I got off of the highway and took some back roads home.
The oil "problem" onle occurs above 60 MPH (or about 10 minutes on the
highway). The question is, of course, is my oil pump shot (150,000 miles plus
overheating), or is it possible that my new oil filter has become clogged with
residual antifreeze. Any advice? TEA

Regards,

George
