for those who want a change from the usual ur-q rumble and clunk, and have
put some effort into a good sound system for the car, i have developed a
pattern for a rear speaker box which fits under the existing rear trim.
after spending a lot of time thinking about fabricating a complete
replacement of the rear parcel shelf, i decided that it was better left
alone, and i went to work developing a box which would fit under the
existing trim.
this comprises a triangular box of 18mm mdf roughly 1100mm wide, shaped
very carefully to fit into the existing space, and to mate with the cut-out
speaker holes over the petrol tank. while im sure the dimensions and
physics of the box will not keep audifiles (hah!) happy - as they are pretty
small, and have to be rear ported, it will, i hope, produce a better sound
than the existing setup where the speakers are simply anchored into the
fiberglass rear shelf. with the arrangement ive developed, the box is
screwed to the car from the boot and allows the rear parcel shelf to be
screwed to the box as well. this is a much more solid arrangement than the
original - as many will now, the way the rear shelf is located leaves a lot
to be desired.
when fitted, you cannot tell that the box is in place, and you can, of
course, use the existing speaker size if you wish to be completely stealthy.
with the arrangement ive developed, you are limited in the vertical size of
the speaker to around 110-120mm max.
i have not as yet tried the system in anger, as i am shopping around for a
new set of rear speakers, im looking for a better quality set of speakers
not too much bigger than the oem units, and very quiet if you know what i
mean.
if anyone wants the dimensions of the box and kit instructions, drop me a
line. this will save you a great deal of trouble with measurement and
checking, and measurement and checking, did i say measurement and checking?
if im allowed to crow, i cut it once, and it fit perfectly
