Upshift Indicator & Backup Lights

The upshift indicator on my 85 4kq has stopped working.  This wouldnt bother me if it wanst directly related to my reverse lights not working either.  From what ive read i think the problem is either relay #3 or something to do with the "switch on the transmission"
I know nothing about either.  Is there a way to test a relay?  Do they get burned out like fuses do? How do i even get it out? (i yanked on it a bit but chickened out when it gave resistance)  
I know nothing about this.  Could someone point me in the right direction before i do something stupid?

I dont know if this helps, but right before it stopped working the upshift indicator would tell me to shift even when i was in 5th. Does that help narrow down what went wrong?  Didnt think so...  :-)

I am very new to Audi's, the q-list and even cars in general, but i really want to learn all i can about my car and thanx to this list and its archive i have upgraded my knowledge from being a "complete idiot" to just a normal "idiot".... meaning that any info on these systems or any info at all you could give me would be greatly appreciated.
