Type 44 clutch pedal vibrates

Well, I just replaced my lifters (many thanx to the
list for advice there) and now my '89 200 tqa is
lonely again so a new problem has appeared.  
  The clutch pedal "vibrates/pulsates" when depressed
and while I let it out, particularly when from a dead
stop, 1-2, and 2-3.  Shifting to 4th and 5th seems
normal.?  If I press the brake the pedal *seems* to
vibrate less *sometimes* but not conclusively. Car has
170k on the clock.
  I know very little of clutches (obviously).  Is this
what is known as clutch chatter?  Either way, what is
the most likely cause?  Worst/best case scenario?  
  This problem worries me the most of any to date, I
suspect many dollar signs will be associated w/the
repair :-(
