20v Temp Sensor

After reading through the archives, I believe I've narrowed a problem I'm having with my 90Q20v to a bad temperature sensor (intermittant guage operation), however there seems to be a different twist to my situation that I'd like confirmation on: I can get the temperature guage in the instrument cluster to work if I idle the car for a very long time, at which point the car overheats, as the cooling fan doesn't come on. So in a nutshell, when the fan works, the guage doesn't, and vice versa. Do I have a bad thermostat as well as bad temp sensor???
Also, I'm manual-less at the moment (looking for a used Bentley set if anyone has one for sale), and need to know how to get access to the sensor and thermostat, as they're pretty buried in there. Anyone have this documented on a website or care to share some info???
