It serves three purposes:
1) protects engine components from debris.
2) Adds to the aerodynamic 'slip' of the vehicle. (that is, you are more
aerodynamic with it)
3) Helps to catch all the oil from that small oil leak, so your dad doesn't
force you to park your car on the street! Just wash occasionally, and he'll
never know...
Okay, so perhaps on your car it only serves two purposes...regardless, I would
certainly replace it. Used is fine, just ensure that all the mounting points
are good, and it's not cracked.
