the smaller, usually blue, wire is the exciter, carries up to about 5
amps to magnetize the rotor winding. The larger wire or pair of wires,
which are red, are the output to the battery/starter/fusebox "buss" - I
think on the UrQ the alt is on the pass side and the fat wire goes to
the starter then to the battery and fuse box.
So they are both "hot," sort of, but the big one is hooked up right to
the battery and is *always* hot. The little one is only energized while
the key is in the "run" position.
