12V A4 pinging

My mothers A4 has started pinging recently under
moderate load at about 2000rpm.  This is something
new.  The type of gas and the gas station has not
changed (Chevron).  Any ideas?  Suggestions for a
website for trouble shooting the A4.  The car is a
1996 A4 2.8L 12 valve quattro 5 speed. (completely
stock)
