Fuel consumption statistics.

Dear List,

I own an A4 1.8TQ -96. Since I don't have a trip computer
I wish to build my own fuel gauge. My goal is to connect
a laptop to this device and record the fuel consumption
during the ride.

Now to my question: What device(s) do I need to measure
fuel flow and how do I get the actual kilometre readings?
What do Audi use in their trip computer setup?
