82 CGT Wiring Woes

Well, I got the clutch release bearing replaced, the tranny in and the car
drives and moves under it's own power. I started checking things to see if
I could get the car inspected. My first check was the lights. They don't
work. Then I checked the wipers, also no dice. While I was sitting there
idling the light switch started smoking and melted around the harness
connector. Then the radiator started making noises and all of a sudden
there was a miniature volcano under the hood (So there were two eruptions
last night, one in the Philippines and one in my front yard.) Coolant
everywhere. The radiator fan wasn't on at all. The drivers side window
doesn't work, but you can see the voltmeter move when you press the button.

On the positive side the brake lights and 3 of the 4 turn signals work,
most of the dash guages and lights work (except the temp guage apparently)
and the HVAC system does work. 134 converted AC blasted out the cold
air. Glad I didn't bother replacing the clutch, because this one is very
good. The passenger window works.

This CGT has had a conversion to an later model (85 or thereabouts) dash
and console. The fusebox was also changed. It looks like some of the
wiring was swapped over, but most of the 85 switches are spliced. The dash
gauges aren't spliced, however.

After this set back, I whipped out my multimeter and started checking
things out. The radiator fan connector at the fan was melted and
destroyed. Even if I jumpered the thermo-switch or the relay directly
(which showed +12V at the relay) the fan won't kick on. I still need to
hook it right to the battery and see if it works at all.

I then moved to the lights. If you run a continuity check from the light
terminal itself to the fusebox, the wires aren't in the right location, and
several are tied together inappropriately. At the switch, there is all
kinds of chaos, with no wire going to the right location, even though all
the wires are connected to the same color wire. Also under the hood near
the lights several wires are just cut in two, for no apparent
reason. While performing this fix, I'm going to switch the headlights over
to run off relays.

Basically I have determined a nimrod did the wiring swap. I have access to
a 84 4000 S at the local junkyard and it is fairly complete (complete front
end with lights, fenders, bumper and all there, very tempting. I'm
definitely taking the wheels, they are the 20 or so multispokers on a 4x100
pattern. There is also a 80's 5k, I might be able to use some stuff from
it (rad stuff, right?)

I have a Bentley manual for my year CGT (1983) and can follow the wiring
pretty well. However, I need a copy or fax or something of a 84-86 CGT
wiring diagram so I can figure out what to do about the swap. Can anyone
help me out?
