Did he ask you to pop the hood? I thought that the proper approach was to
spray the extinguisher through the grille, that way giving less air to fuel
the fire.

Halon is preferred as it doesn't screw up your electronics the way household
fire extinguishers will. I've also heard that some people that carry halon
bottles also carry regular ones. The (expensive and difficult to find) halon
is for your fires...the other bottle is for everyone elses fires!
One good source for halon bottles is ogracing.com. They offered a group
discount to the Porsche club a while back, selling a 5a10bc bottle for $75
(normally $125, IIRC). Mine's mounted on the leading edge of my driver's
seat, about 6 inches below my knees. Metal to metal mounting...do be careful
when you pick a place to mount your bottle. If you ever roll your car, you
don't want the bottle tearing free and killing someone.
