Hmm, Alex, from the info that I have, I am going to explore a new theory...
When analyzing a situation like this, one needs to step back and ask, what is
really the one thing that is wrong with your car (or out of ordinary) as it
stands...I have to say the loose downpipe. That missing bolt is really the
first domino that fell to begin a sequence of events that led to an engine
fire in your engine compartment. There was obviously a lot of heat present,
and 1600 degree exhast gas from a severely leaking downpipe is a lot of heat,
especiallyconsidering you were likely travelling under boost for a sustained
period over 10 minutes.
I have seen a hot side K26 grenade, and the gas that escaped from only about
15 seconds of the engine running was able to burn through the passenger side
wire harness.
Also, did'nt the fireman short out the battery and reignite the fire, causing
a lot of the damage to the battery cable?
Just a thoery, I haven't seen the car, but that downpipe sounds like the most
suspicious piece of your puzzle.

of the downpipe bolts was missing, which is very odd indeed and doesn't seem
to work into the wiring explanation. Maybe just a coincidence that bolt
worked it's way out at that point in time. I heard the whizzy turbo about
4-5 minutes before I smelled the gas and pulled over.
