Outer CV Boot 86 5KS Auto

A rather simple but dumb question...
Do you need to remove the entire axle to replace the outer boot, or can you
get enough movement in the strut after removing the lower control arm bolt
to slide the stub axle out?
I have done a few axles before, but haven't tried this. It would be nice to
leave the inner CV alone if possible. Always seem like they are fun to
remove.
