IF you get lucky you can remove the joint with the axel still in the car,
but usually you have to remove the whole thing and do it on a bench. A
vice, brass hammer and some brass 1inch round stock helps too. The
bigger question is why bother, the last time I changed an axel on the '84
5KS, bought a rebuilt unit with guarantee from Foreign Autoparts (a
regular parts store....the wholesalers were all closed since it was
saturday) for a whopping $50. That was a few years and several thousand
miles ago, no problems yet.
I tried doing the V8Q on the car (torn boot), cost me an extra hour or
two for being stubborn (me, not the car). I was glad I finally removed,
because while cleaning the old grease out there was some gritty abrasive
mixed in with the grease, the sand or whatever it was would have
probably eaten the CV by now if I didn't get it all out in the parts
washer before regreasing.
