Here's what I do:
Stuff soft cotton rope into the cylinder upon which you need to remove the
valve springs. Do this through the spark plug hole while the piston is all
the way down in the cylinder, but just before the compression
stroke. Stuff as much rope as you can in there, it will take 6 or so feet
usually. Leave several feet sticking up from the spark plug hole so it
doesn't drop in there. Then turn the crank over by hand until you can't
any more, but don't force it, just up to the point of resistance. This
will lock the valves against the head. You can then do whatever procedure
you wanted to do. This method takes a while, but a lot less time than
removing a head!
