Odometer not working in 4000Q

Tony,
I'm surprised it's gone that far. These typically fail right around 130K,
but I think mostly related to the oxy sensor reset "crap" that puts drag on
the odometer gearing. I have dissected several of these. The driven gear
which sits adjacent to the worm gear drive usually gets forced off the
shaft, or more commonly, the entire shaft slips out on the other end.
It is easy to put it back again, but then it will typically come right back
out. I understand the real fix is to remove the driven gear shafta and all
and either pin drill a hole at the end to put a mini cotter pin through, or
cut a groove in the shaft and install a circlip. Use a nail or drill bit to
keep the gears in place when you remove the driven gear and shaft.
You will need to remove the oxy sensor reset gear "crap" in order to access
the shaft, but that is what you would want to do anyway, as it only
contributes to the failure.
This is a definately a design problem wtih these units.
I hope this helps.

'85 4kcsq (x2) + parts car and about 6 non-working odometer in speedo
clusters in a box and 2 which have been repaired as described above in the
cars.
'87 5kcstqw with odometer repaired - different failure due to gear which
disintegrates.
[I have a 1986 4K-CSQ with almost 200K miles on it.
Recently the Odometer and the trip meter stopped
working but the speedometer is still working. Does
anyone in Audi land have any idea what is going on??
Thanks in advance.
