Same goes for 85-87 Type 81, with the facelifted body. The 81-84 type 81 had
5-cylinders but there were no 90 then. The 90 was introduced to be the 200's
little brother and a bit uplevel from the 80, so the 90 got the 5-cylinder
engines while the 80 had to stick with 4 cylinders.

It was called the "80 GTE quattro"

Correct, but with one exception: The 90 Turbodiesel had the 1.6 4-cylinder.
This was both in the type 81 and type 89. No diesel + quattro.

This is because they dropped the 90 (and 200) so the 80 yet again had bigger
engines than 4-cylinders.

Also seen this in a Passat Variant Syncro (aka Quantum).
