87 5kcstq Dead Fuel Pump Troubleshooting

With little fuel in the tank, it's really not an unpleasant job. I
thought it was easier than expected. The connections on the pump, BTW,
are straightforward. They wisely use different sized connectors for the
positive and negative wires, so you can't swap them. 

The procedure goes something like

- remove everything (incl. spare tire) from the trunk
- use a non-sparking drift to turn the plate that covers the tank
- disconnect what you must and negotiate the fuel level sender out of
the tank
- reach in and release the plastic clips that hold the pump in
- yank the pump

Reassembly is... well, you know.

I found that there was only a thin coating of gunk on the intake screen,
so I elected to leave the screen on my new pump. I couldn't see anything
flaking off the tank.
