Thought I'd give my 3 pennies. Well, I don't know if this would apply to
your car too, but my car had suffered those same symptoms. Mine though,
is an '86 5KQT. My friends mechanic claimed it to be the ignition switch
and housing. He also told me Audi had a TSB on it. I don't know if they
did or not, I have no way to to check it. End result is my car hasn't
done it again and it has since started the engine on the 1st turn of the
key. This was done 9/25/00 and 20k miles ago.

Yesterday, I bought a new starter for my '89 200Q and put the battery on
the charger. Well, I just got the new starter installed,
hooked up the battery, turned the key, and click, click, click. A few
words that I won't repeat here were uttered, then I went through and
rechecked all the connections. All seems fine, and I even tried another
battery. So, now what do I do?

Look for a bad battery cable or ground cable. You may need to use a volt
meter to do this. In order to perform this test, hook the volt meter to
each end of the suspect cable, and try to start the car. The
voltage should stay near zero. If it doesn't, that means that cable, or
one of the connections in it has high resistance, and you can narrow it
down from there. You could also try using a wire directly from the
battery to run the starter, and see if it runs then, which would point
to a problem in the ignition switch, wiring, or associated components.
