Impedance match. The stock radio antenna input impedance was
matched to "wacky." This raises the possibility of a 2nd solution:
a matching transformer or "balan" in line with the antenna feed.
The trouble, of course, is reverse engineering the stock system
to obtain the correct values. There may be a slight chance the
data is published in the Bose manual or elsewhere. The external
antenna solution may still give the best performance.
