Dashpots (Throttle Body Setup)

Speaking of dashpots and throttle bodies. I have being pay some
attention to this thread since my car does this hanging between shift deal.
I have two extra throttle bodies sitting around the house here. One of them
is a Golf GTi 8v throttle body which is for the turbo project. First thing
I noticed is that it has no stop for the larger butterfly valve, someone
obviously yanked it. Is it necessary to have one?
I then noticed I could see daylight through the little butterfly. I
backed off on the stop until it closed fully, no tension on the stop, then I
slowly turned the stop in until I felt tension. I also shined a flashlight
through the backside to see how large of a gap around the valve there is,
which to my surprise is a lot, on both valves, not an amazing amount, but I
always though there should be no gaps at all.

Now what exactly is this dashpot everyone is ranting about? Is it the
stop for the linkage?

Cheers!
