The vacuum pump for the power brakes - augments the engine vacuum.  You
probably didn't hurt anything except your knuckles.

The ISV is to the left of the valve cover when facing the engine
compartment, at the front of the intake manifold.  it is held in a
rubber thing that encircles it and has a wiring connector on one end. 
It should be silver underneath the grime.
