Ur-q gearbox oil

be careful with the method which fills the gearbox to the filler hole. for
instance, with the cgr (6-speed) transmission, audi specify that, in the rs2
spec (early rs2's used the cgr, not the crb) - it must be filled with less
oil (filled to 18mm *below* the plug), than when it is in an s2 (where it
should be 7mm *below* the plug i.e. more oil). identical gearbox. too much
frothing of the oil would be detrimental to gearbox life i guess...
sorry, i'm on holiday and don't have the manuals handy. does anyone know
for sure that filling to the plug gives the correct capacity in
ur-quattro's, and if so, are there any ur-q gearboxes where this is not the
case?

Capacity is 3.2 litres upto no. 15075 and 2.2 litres thereafter (see back
cover of Bentley). If it is your MB then I'm sure it is the latter.

Actually, I think that I've just found the answer to my question.
In the archives from June 97, Mr Payne advised:-
>Checking the gearbox oil level is easy, productive and messy. The filler
is a

oil
>bottle's proboscis, and squeeze. When the stuff overflows and drips in

If its good enough for Phil, its good enough for me. Back under the car.....

Anybody - what's the refill oil capacity of an Ur-q APX gearbox?
I think the full capacity is 3.2 litres so I'd expect the refill to be
around 3. What I've drained out is nothing like that, 2-2.5 at best and its
not pleasant stuff, brown/black and stinks - rather a lot of foam too so I'm
guessing that the slight noise from the gearbox was down to it being low on
oil.
