Techtonics makes a nice downpipe for the VW Fox, which will also fit
the 4000 with 4-cylinder. The exhaust manifold needs to be changed,
though, to the twin-outlet style with steep-angled flange (from the old
Audi Fox or VW Dasher). The Fox/Dasher manifold doesn't have an OXS
sensor fitting, but the Techtonics downpipe does. So the sensor can
be mounted there. A 3-wire heated OXS sensor should be used instead.

If the tall gearing of the 4E bothers you (great economy but anemic
acceleration in the higher gears), you can swap in a later 4000 4-cylinder's
5-sp tranny. The 85-87 4000S FWD have the "sportiest" gear ratios found
in US 4000 models (type 013 transmission, code 2P). If you do some
hot-rodding of the engine you may find that the '84 4000S FWD's tranny
to have a better compromise, the medium ratio means less revs on the
highway yet allowing decent acceleration. That tranny's is type 013 code 2N.
The latter is what I'm using now on my 4000.
