(1) Carefully pry off the trim around the climate control. Care in needed
as these tend to get brittle after all these years. Pull the climate
control unit out. They use the standard Audi instrument bulb. It's very
simple.
(2) You can replace the bulb. Radio shack has the bulbs but they are clear.
You have to disassemble the switch and desolder the bulb. It's time
consuming but can be done. The bulbs in the switch are red so once you get
the bulb out take it to the makup counter and look for a matching red nail
polish...work great. Paint the new bulb, let it dry and solder it in.
(3) This is the same bulb as (2). Search the archives there is a writeup on
this. It's rather simple. Pull the instrument cluster the temp gage is
held in by two screws. Disassemble the gage (2 more screws) replace the
bulb and put the whole thing back together. Careful of when taking the temp
gage apart there are two "rubber" connections that must be in the right
location for the thing to work. They'll fall out but just pay attention to
where they go.
Good luck,
Robert Bauer

Well, now that we've replaced the valve cover gaskets within the first
week of owning this car and it no longer leaks a drop (Yahoo! No head
gasket leaks!), I can obsess about the smaller but nevertheless
irritating things that don't work right. If anyone has experience with
the following, I would really appreciate your advice, especially since I
don't have a repair manual yet:
(1) Light bulb behind the automatic climate control display is out.
The fan works fine, but the backlighting on the right side of the panel
is gone.
(2) Bulbs behind the driver's side seat heater button and the defroster
button are out, but both work fine (just not lit). Anyone know if I
have to replace the whole switch on those or if there's a way to put in
a new bulb?
(3) Light bulb behind the outdoor temp. display on the same panel as the
tachometer and speedometer also out.
Piece by piece this is slowly turning into a new car!
Thanks,
Diana
