Transmission Temp

I'm about to depart on a short voyage with my '89 200, non quattro.
This will be the first time it has towed a trailer but the trailer is
very light, about 1200 lbs, a pop-up camper. I'm interested in the
affect on the transmission as it is an automatic, recently overhauled,
but still a rather weak drive train link.
There is a gauge for engine oil temperature which has never shown the
oil to reach even a medium temperature so I conclude the gauge is
useless or the sender is shot or the oil temp is really consistently
low. In any case, my question is this - how much trouble would it be to
install a sensor in the transmission to detect transmission oil temp?
It would be connected to the current gauge for engine oil temp (instead
of the the present engine oil temp sensor).
Any BTDTs? Any reason not to try this?
Thanks,
Larry Newman
