I've been thinking about changing shocks and springs on my avant,
haven't got too far yet, but I did talk to the dealer, which may give you
some reference for aftermarket prices.

He says that the factory springs are colour coded, so if you can find a
dab of paint on the springs, under all the grime, then you have a key to
spec. of the springs fitted. Apparantly the code for my '88 2.0 is Orange.
the bad new is that new OEM springs for me in the UK are 60GBP + VAt,
(~$90).

Shocks are worthy of the name at 162GBP (~$243!!). As I usually only
ever fit OEM stuff to my cars that stopped me dead in my tracks.

As far as ride height is concerned mine sits unloaded except for maybe
3/4 tank of petrol with about 1 inch clearance of wheelarch lip above
treadface of tyre. (standard rims and 185's).

Speaking generally now, springs can lower with time, but its not a
given, like a lot of things it all depends on how well engineered they are
for the job in hand and what they come up against in their lifetimes.
However in the case of Avants I suspect they are liable to sag a bit, as on
level ground my car seems to sit about 10mm lower on the drivers side rear,
(which is the reason for me to be looking into this subject in the first
place)

    HTH
