remove the cam cover (after removing everything in the way...). Remove
the timing belt cover (after removing everything in the way...).
Somehow try to mark belt and pulleys to save your timing reference. Use
a big allen wrench to lock the cam pulley, and undo its bolt. remove
pulley, don't lose tiny woodruff key. Remove cam bearing cap things,
keep then in order since each one is unique. Remove camshaft (might
have to cut lock on dizzy keeper and loosen/remove dizzy to pull
camshaft). Lift out lifters, lube the heck out of the new ones and
gently drop them in. Reassemble :-) using Bentley torque specs. Run
engine without "fire" to build some oil pressure.
This would be a really good time to do the water pump and timing belt
and idler pulley if they are over, say, 30k miles. Also a good time to
examine all your trusty crusty vacuum lines, since you'll be undoing a
lot of them.
You'll need at minimum a new cam cover gasket and a new camshaft oil
seal.
I think that about covers it, though I skimmed over some details...
This job may be time consuming but it is easy, don't let my sloppy
attitude throw you off!
