The other place I would look is the hollow bolt going into the fuel metering
head (high pressure side). These had a small filter inside that was for
catching stuff from the assembly process and was supposed to be removed at
one of the early service intervals. My old 4k had this filter in the bolt
and when I would accelerate with WOT it would get to 4K rpm and hang there.
If I accelerated at maybe 1/4 to 1/2 throttle, it would rev all the way to
redline. I removed the VERY dirty filter and the problem was solved.
My current 89 90q was originally bought as a rental car so it was not
serviced at a dealer and when I checked at 150k miles the filter was still
there and VERY "gunked" up(although with no apparent performance issues).
