Paint procedures

Hi Mike;
I use Corlar 810R with a 1020R polyurethane topcoat for a primer system, but
the Corlar 824S/826S does a good job.
What are you painting? The technique used for a panel differs a bit from
that used on suspension parts.
In any case, look at the label on your paint can. It should tell you the
ratio of 824S to 826S to mix and how much thinner to add. It should also
give you the air pressure to use at the gun.
I assume you are using a siphon feed gun. There are two adjustments on the
gun. The large screw adjusts how much paint passes through the nozzle by
controlling how far the needle is withdrawn from the nozzle when the trigger
is pulled right back. Note that you always pull the trigger right back when
painting to ensure an even flow of paint out of the gun. It takes quite a
bit of practice to be able to feather the trigger and get an acceptable job.
The other screw adjusts the shape of the spray fan by controlling the amount
of air passing through the ports in the nozzle wing tips. Use a piece of
paper or cardboard to set up the gun to get a flat fan of paint about 8-10"
long when you hold the gun 10 - 12" away from the surface. Note that you can
change the fan from vertical to horizontal by rotating the nozzle on the
gun.
When painting a panel, overlap the spray patterns 50% - that is, the top
edge of the second spray pass hits the middle of the previous spray pass.
Keep the gun perpendicular to the surface at the same distance - don't sweep
it in an arc. Release the trigger at the end of each pass. Painting primer
is easy - you can always use sandpaper to fix up your mistakes!
Oh yes - make sure you clean up your gun by running lacquer thinner through
it as soon as you are done. If that Corlar sets up in your gun, you might as
well toss it. A drop of oil on the needle shaft packing doesn't hurt either.
Good luck, have fun, wear a good mask or you'll be sick as a dog for three
days afterwards.
