filtering PS fluid(looking for info on a thread a few years back)

Just the topic I was pondering myself. With all the threads about hydraulic
failures...I'm surprised this idea hasn't been investigated already.

I also have run into the idea of using a standard metal canned fuel filter
on the return line to the PS reservoir. I saw this on an episode of
Motorweek, or was it Last Chance Garage? My first thought was that little
thing can withstand the pressure???

Apparently, there isn't much pressure on the return side. I'd estimate
10-15 psi.
The paper media may survive. But I can't be sure of the Audi's return pressure.

I looked into some other in-line fuel filters. Two aftermarket ones looked
feasible, each with its pros/cons.

Both are re-usable. One consists of an aluminum tube with screwed on ends.
The element is a bronze mesh. You can rinse off the element and re-install
it. But it doesn't have level of filtration achieved by paper or the 2nd
aftermarket filter.

The 2nd unit uses a nylon cartridge which is disposable once clogged. The
cartridge is seated in the middle of a tempered glass cylinder, capped by
steel ends which screw down and compress on the glass cylinder for a seal.
The idea of using glass was so the owner can inspect the element easily.
But the downside is the limited pressure it can withstand. but its
filtration is superior to the bronze and paper elements.
* I guess one can machine a matching stainless steel cylinder to replace
the glass.

If pressure is a concern and fuel filters aren't appealing to
you....there's always the use of a very small motorcycle spin on oil
filter. They are cheap, high flow, high pressure, and aren't too large to
waste precious Pentosin. The threading on most of these filters are
identical to those on japanese cars.
If one can locate a source for remote mounts meant to use an existing
japanese filter, and not the humongous Ford PH-8(?), we may have an ideal
solution.
A couple of NPT barb or NPT to AN fittings and we're set.

Just my $0.02.
