96 A6q advice

I have been on digest mode for a couple of weeks, and enjoyed the extra time 
it put back in my life. I went into withdrawal, so I caved in and went back 
to full submission of control of my life.
Anyway, I am thinking about upgrading my wife's 91 100 with a 96 A6Q. The 
recent posts about the V6 not being "modable" is not an issue with the 
"significant others" machinery.
Any particular issues this model has to beware of, or a model to steer clear 
of? I have not kept up with this series to any degree, and need the lists 
expertise. What is the average value for a well maintained example?
I have seen a 97 (very clean) for $21k, and a 96 (also very clean) for $15k. 
Seems a wide spread for one year. Any reason for that?
I will be checking my old issues of the car mags for write-ups, but would 
like some real world experience BTDT.
