Well,
Had a go off the line vs. one, I was laden with a Mt. Bike, two 5 qt jugs
of Mobil 1 (thanks for the tip Smitty, and BTW, only availible in some
Wal-Mart stores, definitely not all) and sundry other stuff, and I still
handily out launched him (I know he was trying 'cuz he got wheel spin for
about 0.5 - 1 sec, and had him until mid to late 2nd gear, and he began
pulling away when I was into 3rd, traffic ended it right then, he had his
back bumper at my front. Not bad 162 HP vs. 260, eh?
As for the other Audi content, tried fixing intermittent possible ground
faults in my dash display, used DeOxit (US cheaper version of Stabilant I
think) some problems seem better (clock seems to be solid now, and so far
no hieroglyphics from the display), but the weird ABS problem still works
only with the parking or headlights on and never when in reverse (which
are no longer working) problem remains, didn't have time to try
resoldering, but saw no broken traces. In addition, Audi decided to put
some form of conformal coating on the PCB making it impossible to probe
with standard meter probes. Any ideas, or anyone know of a good PCB
repair person in the Rockland Cty area of NY?
In addition, tip for those pulling instrument clusters from 100/200
series '89 - up. Remove the trim piece from under the IC first, then
remove the clam shell off of the steering column. The clam shell comes
off MUCH more easily this way. Also, use something more substantial than
masking tape to protect the top of the right side of the steering column
wood trim. My masking tape attempt failed (tape stayed stuck, but
scratching went through the tape), but after use of polishing compound,
it is MOSTLY covered by the trim piece =( .
Finally, re-calibrated the fuel milage meter to the closest setting to
what I was getting real world. Driving with the meter on is sobering. To
break 20 MPG, I can't use the throttle at all (3.2 CL's non-withstanding,
and that dropped the display a solid 1 MPG for one little sprint), and
seeing 17 MPG for the first few miles after the reset really made me
drive a whole lot more conservatively. But with 93 octane running $1.969
to $2.059 in NY (NJ is about $0.20 cheaper), I plan to pay more attention
to the meter.
