I don't like using those tools, I use a propane torch to heat the strut arm (hold it out on the end) after about 40 sec. you hit the nut still left on the tie rod threads and it will pop out due to the expansion of the strut arm. Often the tie rod tools rip the rubber around the tierod, I prefer the torch method.
This works well for rear ball joints by heating the cast iron that the balljoint inserts into.
