2 I would like to put some larger wheels on this car, at the very
least upgrading to the slightly larger rims found on later models. If I
can add some width as well, that would be great, but I'm not sure I'm up
to a 5-lug conversion at this time.

Jamex is no longer a company, but you might still be able to get a surplus
stress bar - expect to pay around 195$ from a company like 2Bennett or TAP.
I bought one, and have been very happy with it. For god's sake - don't
change the bolt pattern! You've got the best situation - 4x100, and you can
run most VW wheels, some BMW wheels, some Honda wheels, etc. I'd go with a
nice set of GTi wheels, or Jetta GLi BBS's, if you can find them. Cheap
upgrade. Plus, you can mount 16V VW brakes on your car without much
difficulty (consult with Huw). Doing the 5 lug conversion would set you back
not only in $$$, but in wheel options - you're much more open with the
4x100's.
Later!
