Strut tower brace/wheel upgrade/intake mod

I recommend the type 89 unit - cheap, simple, cool looking... Marc has
one on his 4kqt.  Not sure if it will clear the battery though.

As was said earlier, stick with your 4x100 setup - VW rims are easy,
also try imparts.com (?), they often have wheels on special for about
$80 each that will work.  That's where I got my coupe wheels.

it is harebrained :-)

If you want to pressurize the intake air you should drive the fan with
exhaust gas or a belt off the crankshaft.  Otherwise some nice 3" or so
ductwork works well.

If your car is the 4 cyl, btw, you probably have some VW-oriented
options for hopping it up that are a lot cheaper than for the 5 cyl
engines.  Look into it...
