5ktq steering problem

My 5ktq (lowered with coil-over kit) is making some odd clangin noises...  
coming from the general area around the steering rack when I crank the wheel 
sharply to the left or right.  Otherwise, steering feels great.  Nice, crisp, 
etc... but  when I have to give a sharper turn (in parking lots or into a 
parking space), I get a bouncy feel in the steering wheel and hear a clanging 
noice.  Very disconcerting...

Any ideas???  Is my steering rack toast???  Any clues???
