Yeah, they're all like that. Learned the hard way it's for the better,
because routing my A/F gauge wire too close to the fresh air fan motor
caused significant intereference on the line. The shielding prevents that.
I'd highly suggest running the A/F guage from a second oxygen sensor, cause
if your signal from the sensor is seriously out of whack (i.e. either always
very rich or always very lean) the computer will ignore it and put 0.5V on
that line... Causing your gauge (and you) to believe you're always near
stoich when you're really far from it.
Additionally, I'd recommend using the green coaxial from a old ECU harness
to go from your second sensor to your gauge, or a coaxial cable with the
sheath grounded at one end only, to prevent induced currents on the signal
from ground loops.
